Heather (Eccles) DeJoode
Posted Saturday, May 8, 2010 09:40 AM

Thursday, May 6th, Heather and her 3 children were involved in a horrible car accident.  Details are located below.  In terms of an update...well, unfortunately the outcome was unimaginably bad.  Heather lost two of her children, Carson DeJoode, age 5, died at Iowa Methodist Medical Center Friday. His sister, 5-month-old Claire, died at Mercy Medical Center on Saturday morning.

Jay Grassley posted the following on Facebook, he is a close family friend:  "Carson & claire will live on in our hearts and others bodies. Lots of matches for their organs. Chase sore & beat up but doing great ate some ice cream & fries. Heather even squeezed a hand while they washed her hair."

I don't have any further updates but if you have factual information that you can post here, please do.

We are all saddened for Heather and Troy's loss and their family is in our thoughts and prayers in the largest possible way.  Please pray for them in this very difficult process to come.

I wanted to share this verse.  You may already be familiar with it.  Sometimes we don't understand why things happen the way that they do...we are not meant to understand and we can't comprehend because Gods plans for each of us was not meant to be understood by us.

Isaiah 55:8-9
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

Thank you!

The following update was on KCCI's Facebook page:

STATEMENT FROM TROY DEJOODE"On behalf of my wife Heather and our
families, I want to thank our family, friends, community and people
from all over Iowa who have reached out to us in our time of need. The
emergency team and the staffs at Mercy Medical Center and Blank
Children's Hospital have been wonderful. As was earlier announced, we
are grieving for our son, Carson, and our daughter, Claire, who passed
away Thursday and Friday, respectively. It is of some consolation that
in our tremendous loss, six individuals may have their lives saved
through organ donation. My wife, Heather, remains in critical but
stable condition at Mercy and faces multiple surgeries and a long road
to recovery. Our son, Chase, is in fair condition at Blank and we are
hopeful he will be released in the next few days. Our hope is that we
will continue to be the fortunate recipients of your thoughts and
prayers and that we will continue to see respect for our need for
privacy at this time."Friends of the DeJoode's have set up a memorial
fund in Carson and Claire's name at Veridian Credit Union. Donations
may be made at any metro Des Moines area Veridian branch office.

We will be sending out a notice to take donations for the family later today.

Posted Yesterday from Troy at 2:47pm:

"Heather had another surgery this morning. it went well. she is resting and recovering. She will have her next one Friday. That will be an all day surgery. Chase will probably stay another night as he's not moving about as much as they would like. He's still in the neck brace and will be a for a week or so at least."

Posted by Troy yesterday on FB:

"Many have asked what they can do to help. If you would like to help I would simply ask that you spend 5 minutes looking at Iowa Donor Registry to see what they do. I'm not asking that you register (although that would be wonderful) just tthat you visit and learn more. Thanks for taking a look."

Many people have asked the question regarding how Heather is doing - here is a note directly from Troy in response to that question and the help we as a class are providing:

"Heather is still unconscious. Thanks for all you've done. I appreciate it."

Thank you!

Posted tonight on Facebook by Jay Grassley:

"Chase is going to stay 1 more day, physical therapy is going well & they
want to get him more confident on his feet. Heather's surgery went well
on her hips yesterday. She is getting more responsive. Carson & Claire funeral arrangements pending & memorial fund thru Veridian Credit Unions. Please consider organ donation at Iowa Donor Registry to sign up. Some good can come out of this tragedy."

Posted on Facebook from Troy an hour ago:

"Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. We are blessed to have so many great friends. And while appreciate them all I would ask that you also remember in your prayers those who recieved organs from Carson and Claire. The donation and the transplant are just the beginning of their fight, and they can use the help as much as we can."

Update from Troy 8:35am today:

Heather has surgery to repair her facial fractures today starting sometime around 11. Contrary to what you might have heard on KCRG she is NOT in an induced coma. She's been unconscious since the accident, although she did open her eyes a few times yesterday and she's moving her arms around from time to time.

Message From Jennifer Swartzendruber (Stork):

"Just came from the hospital. Heather's about the same. She is breathing on her own a bit more. The vent is there for backup. She has wiggled her toes when they ask her. Thanks for all the wonderful caring emails. I told her all the classmates are pulling for her. I'll update my status as things change. Keep those prayers and positive thoughts coming."

From Troy 30 mins ago; my heart breaks for him and Chase & the rest of their family:

"Met with H's neurosurgeon 2day after MRI. It shows swelling in the left side of brain. She's in a coma. Nothing that can't be recovered from with lots and lots of healing time but nothing guaranteed. No prognosis on awakening. Will go to skilled care facility full time when she leaves hospital someday. Recovery will be in terms of months/years, not days/weeks. Tough news. Tough day."

Thank you!

Recent updates from Troy:

May 21st:

7:45pm:  Heather had her eyes open some more today. She moved her left arm a lot today again. They moved her to the recliner for a few hours today where she had her eye open. could leave the ICU in the next week or so. Long road to go. Thanks for all your well wishes and all your help.

9:52PM:  Today I got a letter from the Iowa Lions Eye Bank that Carson's cornea's were transplanted in addition to his other organs. A 8 year old girl and a 40 year old man can see today because of him.

10:14pm: Cole, our yellow lab had emergency surgery this morning to remove a large mass about the size of a cantelope from his liver including about half of his liver lobe. He's eating better after the surgery and hopefully things will be okay. The mass went out to determine what it is. Should know next week sometime. When it rains it pours...

May 23rd:

9:28pm: Sitting in the room next to Heather's bed. She made it through the first hour of Celebrity Apprentice with her eyes open watching the show before falling asleep. Sleeping on a futon for 17 straight nights is not anywhere near the burden that it is to watch Celebrity Apprentice.

9:31pm: Heather's eyes were open right away this morning. She sat in the recliner for some time this morning. Then we went in the wheelchair for a ride around the ICU, out in the waiting room to the atrium, then down the elevator to the fountain/wishing well and finally back to the room. She nodded her head "yes" a couple times in response to questions. Her eyes have been open most of the day. Thanks for the well wishes.

May 24th:

Heather is out of ICU. If you come to visit text or email Troy for the room number.

Thank you!

Heather had her first full day on the nuerology floor today. Physical therapy, "speech" therapy (no she's not talking yet), visits from friends, as well as from the nurses from Neuro/Trauma/Medical ICU who came to check on her.

Update from Troy yesterday - one thing to note, my friend Megan's brother is at On With Life - they're an AMAZING facility with some amazing staff and patients for that matter. She is in good hands, as is Troy:

Heather will go tomorrow to On With Life a brain injury rehabilitation facility in Ankeny. She will likely be there until further notice. She will have a little more of a 'schedule' there but will be able to have visitors. Her eyes continue to be open off and on throughout the day. She's doing physical therapy everyday and seems to make her tired.

Thank you!

from Troy on Heather's 1st day at OWL: "Heather went to On With Life about 10:30 a.m. this morning. After 10 hours there there is no doubt in my mind that if there is a place in the world where she can get better, OWL is the place. Physical, occupational and speech therapy, plus a wheel chair ride around the grounds. Heather was asleep by 9 p.m."

Update from Troy yesterday:

"Heather really began to emerge this wkend. Her eyes have been open & she appears more alert, although there's no guarantee that she is. She responds with yes and no head nods although not always appropriately. She's able to move her left leg and arm significantly although not always with great control. She's distressed... at times and in pain. Tonight Heather moved her right leg significantly for the first time."

Thank you!
